Giant Sunflower (Tall Sunflower) Helianthus giganteus There are around 10 sunflower species that grow in Connecticut, best distinguished by their leaves. Giant sunflower is unusual for having most of its leaves alternate, though its lower leaves may be opposite. (Compare to woodland sunflower, which has only opposite leaves.)
