Swamp Rose
Rosa palustris
There are around six species of rose native to Connecticut, all with similar flowers. Swamp rose can be identified by its preference for wet sites, its hooked thorns and its very narrow stipules (see leaf images below).

Swamp rose leaf (left) and stipules (above). To identify swamp rose, look for very narrow stipules. Stipules are small, leaf-like appendages at the base of a leaf stalk. In roses, a pair of stipules usually extends along the leaf stalk from the base nearly to the first leaflet (arrow). In swamp rose, the stipules are very narrow; they barely extend out from the leaf stalk until they flare out at the end. Compare these to the wide stipules of Virginia rose. |
